What Is Chiropractic Theory?

What Is Chiropractic Theory

Chiropractors treat musculoskeletal problems as part of a complementary medical approach. Their primary focus is spine health. Muscles, bones, joints, cartilage, and tendons make up the musculoskeletal system. It protects the organs, enables movement, and provides support to the body.

The chiropractic profession historically believed that disease occurred through the central nervous system due to problems with the musculoskeletal system. Chiropractic no longer holds this belief. In this article, we will explain through research and scientific evidence demonstrating the effectiveness and safety of chiropractic manipulation.

What is The Theory Behind Chiropractic Treatment?

Cheir (hands) and praxis (practice) are the Greek words that form the origin of the word chiropractic. In other words, it is a form of manual therapy. During chiropractic manipulation, a trained chiropractor applies pressure to the spine and other parts of the body to treat and prevent certain musculoskeletal conditions. By applying this pressure, the chiropractor can correct alignment, relieve pain, improve mechanical function, and increase range of motion.

The Basis of Chiropractic Manipulation

Spinal care is the basis for modern chiropractic. According to chiropractors historically, the misalignment of the spinal column was linked to diseases. “Vertebral subluxation complex” was the name given to this theory. Originally, practitioners believed that this caused most of the diseases. By manipulating the spine and overall musculoskeletal system, chiropractors believed they could treat and cure disease.

This belief lacked any scientific basis according to skeptics and scientists. Likewise, early chiropractors opposed the vaccination and germ theory of disease. Therefore, chiropractic care was considered unscientific by the scientific community. Today, chiropractors employ a variety of techniques. Nowadays, the application of chiropractic care for treating musculoskeletal pain is becoming more accepted.

Chiropractic & Osteopathy published a study in 2009 that explored the vertebral subluxation complex theory. Based on its findings, it was concluded that causation could not be proven. Chiropractic claims that disease begins due to misalignment of the spine are therefore unscientific.

An official statement from the International Chiropractic Education Collaboration made it clear in 2014 that chiropractic care no longer endorses the vertebral subluxation complex theory…

Types of Chiropractic Practitioner

“Even though chiropractors are now well-educated, some still hold forth to unscientific beliefs. As a profession, chiropractors who adhere to traditional beliefs that have been left behind are termed straights. Find out if a chiropractor follows a modern approach or a straight one before scheduling an appointment. A person is better able to decide what treatment they are due to receive when they are aware of this.

Exercise therapy, physical therapy, and other medical treatments may be helpful for people with musculoskeletal disorders. Always consult your doctor before making a decision regarding chiropractic treatment.”
