Do you suffer from pregnancy-related low back pain and live in the Wichita, KS area? We can help!

Low back pain during pregnancy is very common. It is estimated that between 50-75% of all pregnant women will experience low back pain. There are many reasons that women can experience low back pain during pregnancy, but it is likely due to changes in weight, posture, gait, and hormones.

However, that doesn’t mean that you should just have to suffer through your pregnancy. Many of our patients have experienced great relief during their pregnancy with the care that we provide in our office!

The most common question we get asked is whether or not it is safe to get adjusted while you are pregnant. The answer is yes! We adapt the way we adjust to ensure the safety of mom and baby with all of the adjustments we provide to expecting mothers.

The Cause of Low Back Pain During Pregnancy

The average woman gains between 20-40 pounds throughout their pregnancy. This moves the center of gravity forward causing the pelvis to tilt and the lumbar spine to sway. This can place excessive stress on the ligaments, discs, and joints of the spine.

Pregnancy-related low back pain usually starts in the 2nd trimester, but some women notice it sooner. You may begin to notice pain at the base of your spine and it commonly radiates into the buttocks, thighs, and hips. Many women notice that their pain is worse during prolonged periods of sitting, standing or when they cough or sneeze.  Many women report that their pain gets worse as the day goes on and it commonly can affect their quality of sleep as well. Women who have dealt with back pain before pregnancy are more than twice as likely to re-develop back pain during pregnancy.

Since medical options are limited, obviously a drug-free treatment is ideal for women who are pregnant for their own health as well as the health of the baby. Studies have shown that almost 75% of women undergoing chiropractic care (like the care we provide in our office) report a significant reduction in their pain and an improved ability to function.
